Vehicles You Can Import:
Trucks exceeding 3 tons, tractor heads and trailers do not require an Import License.
The new age limits (from the manufacturing date to the date of importation) are as follows:
Motor Cars – 3 years
Vans/Light Trucks -4 years
Returning Residents – 5 years
Classic/Antique/Limited-Edition cars may be imported with special license from the Trade Board with the application supported by the Jamaican Classic Car Club.
Importers must give a warranty of 90 days if they intend to sell a vehicle. English manuals must also be given to customers for the car without additional costs.
Used car dealers are required to hold a spare parts inventory representing ten percent (10%) of their current vehicle stock with the majority being mechanical parts.
Department of Homeland Security does not allow imports of vehicles for clients with just their P.O. Box address in the Caribbean’s.
Documents Required for Importing a Used Vehicle:
- Passport
- Driver’s License
- Nation Identification
- Import License
Import Licenses issued by the Trade Board Limited are valid for the duration of the Financial Year in which they are granted, i.e the period April 1st to March 31st of any given year or remaining portion thereof.
All Import Licenses (except for approved Motor Vehicle Dealers) will be clause against sale or transfer of the unit (vehicle) for a period of one (1) year after its arrival.
An Import License is not required for the importation of oversized vehicles (heavy-duty Trucks, Tractors and Trailers – three (3) tons and over unladed weight). However, importers must first obtain written permission from the Island Traffic Authority, before importing such units.
- Certificate of Title (Deregistration Certificate) Title/ Ownership documents which help to classify Registration the motor vehicle for valuation purposes and Certificate is provided by the owner.
- Bill of Lading Provides information about the particulars lading of the vehicle, the date it landed in the island, and at which port of entry. This is obtained from the Shipping Agent.
- Invoice(s) Invoice For a new motor vehicle (under 3000 miles) an invoice is needed from the supplier.
- Bill of Sight This is a document on which details of the motor vehicle being imported are recorded. This is obtained from a Licensed Customs Broker
- Tax Compliance Certificate A document issued as proof that payments Certificate of tax liabilities and wage-related statutory (TCC) deductions are up-to-date. This is obtained from the Revenue Board.
- Taxpayer Registration Number Taxpayer a unique nine digit identification number Registration required for the transaction of business Number (TRN) at Government Revenue Departments. This is obtained from the Revenue Board.
- Import Entry C78 This is the primary import document on Entry which all particulars of the motor vehicle, the importer, shipping information, etc. are recorded. This is prepared and submitted to Customs by a Licensed Customs Broker.
Duty on importing Used Cars:
Import Duty 10-40%
Aggregate Duty 10-180%
GCT 0-100%
Under Section 19 of the Customs Act, “a duty of Customs is chargeable on the value of the goods to be imported at the time of importation. This duty is charged on the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value of the goods, when converted into Jamaican currency.
